An eight mile (13km) stretch of road in Cheshire is Britain's most dangerous road, according to a survey.
The Road Safety Foundation pinpointed the single-carriageway A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton, known as the Cat and Fiddle.
Since 2001, it has seen 43 fatal or serious collisions, nearly three-quarters involving motorcyclists.
The position comes despite the introduction of crash barriers along the road by the county council.
When motorcycle collisions are removed from the figures, the A537 moves to become one of the safest in the country, the foundation said.
The "undulating, bendy" A61 between Barnsley and Wakefield which suffers "poor forward visibility" tops the table, without bike accidents being taken into account.
Design factor
The Road Safety Foundation's Dr Joanne Hill said: "The fact that the A537 tops the list of Britain's most dangerous roads highlights the fundamental issue of road-user behaviour when it comes to safety.
"However, poor road design and inadequate safety measures on the majority of the roads in the list are responsible for a high proportion of the fatal or serious collisions each year."
Persistently higher risk roads are concentrated in the north of England and the Midlands, the research found, and motorways and main roads were highlighted for concern.
The most improved road was the A453 from the A38 to Tamworth, Staffordshire, which saw an 88% drop in fatal or serious collisions over six years.
The foundation said traffic lights, speed limits and extra pedestrian facilities had helped.

New campaign highlights lasting damage of Drink Driving The lasting impact of drink driving is highlighted in a new THINK! campaign launched by Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick. The £1.6m summer campaign with new radio adverts emphasises that a drink drive conviction stays on your licence for 11 years - affecting your job prospects and serving as a constant reminder of the 12-month driving ban you received for driving while over the limit.
Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Drink drivers put themselves and others in serious danger, but getting behind the wheel after drinking can have a devastating impact on your life even if you avoid a crash. You'll get a minimum 12-month driving ban and a large fine - and the record will stay on your licence for 11 years.
"As the weather gets warmer we all want to be out enjoying ourselves and might end up drinking when we hadn't planned to, but that doesn't mean we have to drive home. If you've had a drink use public transport or take a taxi - otherwise that quick pint might end up lasting 11 long years."
The new THINK! adverts highlight just how long a drink drive conviction stays on your licence by pointing out what else you will do in the 11 years. For example: * Your heart will beat 400,000,000 times * You'll breathe enough air to fill 20 hot air balloons * You'll eat enough potatoes to fill 6 phone boxes * You'll drink 36 bathtubs full of water * You'll climb enough stairs to ascend Mt Everest twice * You'll sweat enough to fill 1,612 fish tanks.
As well as the new radio adverts and in-pub advertising the summer drink drive campaign features TV and cinema advertising and a partnership marketing campaign. It runs from June 2 to August 10.

TOM SYKES is determined to score a race win aboard his Rizla Suzuki this coming weekend at Snetterton – a high-speed circuit that will suit his super-fast GSX-R1000 - at round five of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
Following a two week break in the race calendar, Sykes is refreshed and ready to claim his maiden Superbike win. He has shown his winning potential and believes now is the time to make it happen at a circuit where outright power and top speed are required to make fast lap times and both of which are real strengths of the Crescent prepared Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Atsushi Watanabe has had no time to relax as he returned to Japan to take part in the Suzuka 300K race, where he and his team-mate finished in third place. He hasn’t had any track time on a bike at Snetterton, so he will spend free practice getting himself and his Rizla Suzuki dialled into the straight forward circuit.
The 1.952 mile Norfolk circuit has two long straights where the bikes are touching 175mph and 200mph respectively, plus some tight turns where agility and handling come into play. The Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000’s capable chassis and powerful engine are well matched to the demands of the Snetterton track.
Qualifying takes place on Saturday, 14th June at 1500, with race one kicking off at 1315 on Sunday, 15th June and race two at 1630. British Eurosport will broadcast live between 1300-1400 and 1530-1745.
Team Manager, Jack Valentine said: “We are all really looking forward to Snetterton. As a team we set out to challenge for podiums which we have done, but now we want to win. We are feeling confident and I know Tom is really fired up for a top result. I believe we can challenge for our first win of the season at Snetterton.
“Atsu has just returned from the Suzuka 300K race where he had a podium finish, so he is also brimming with confidence. I’m sure he will adapt quickly to Snetterton and we will be on for some strong results.”
